    | Discover A Desert Oasis

As a child I fell in love with the story of Aladdin, I’m pretty sure most of us did. Ever since the Disney movie release way back when, I’ve wanted to ride off on a camel in pursuit of an Arabian adventure! Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa was my first desert experience, and of course I was bound to love every moment of it.

Hidden in the heart of the Dubai desert, surrounded by dunes, Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa is the Arabian dream. Boasting luxury and the traditions of desert culture we were in for quite the treat. Arriving in the UAE, and then arriving at the resort, I remember feeling so excited and intrigued by the heritage we were going to experience. I had no idea what to expect. Was it really as “desert” as the photos portray, would we really see camels?

Bab Al Shams means “gateway to the sun” in Arabic, something we would see for ourselves. The resort is built in a fort, around an oasis. We drove just over 40 minutes from Dubai to reach it, so it’s really not that far out of the city.

Being escorted to our suite, you immediately notice the design purpose of the buildings and how it shelters you from the sun. One step out of the walkway and you’re faced with smoldering heat. The outside of the buildings, as well as the inside was designed and decorated in a timeless Arabian-theme. Getting settled and comfy in our suite was not tough to do. The suite was luxury – it was spacious, had a big bed, a desk you could work at, a little lounge area, an outside patio facing onto the desert, and my favourite part – a beautiful bathroom with a concrete bath and rain shower. The suite was something out of a movie scene….

We unpacked, had a coffee inside the room, put our swimwear on and were off to see what the resort was all about. I couldn’t wait to explore the courtyards and where the paths and walkways would take us – it was like being in a maze, but one that doesn’t make you feel claustrophobic. We came across courtyards with seating spaces for leisure, water features and stylish shelter. We even found an area courtyard filled with just palm trees.

We spent the rest of the afternoon laying by the pool and grabbing a good dose of sunshine.

There are 8 restaurants at Bab Al Shams. The restaurants each have their own flavour and flair, their own specific culinary treats and ambience.

Al Hadheerah is where you’ll experience Arabic dining at its best! Authentic Middle Eastern dishes are up to feast on, and the buffet selection is beyond what you could expect in one evening. The ancient style cuisines are met with entertaining acts – a band, dancers, a camel and horse caravan show – it’s an absolute must when visiting or staying at Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa!

Masala restaurant is found in the middle of the resort. This Indian restaurant has a gorgeous courtyard with palm trees and brings the finest tastes of India to the desert oasis.

Al Forsan overlooks the desert landscape and offers lunch and dinner. It’s also the restaurant the breakfast buffet is served in.

Le Dune Pizzeria is a fusion of Italian and Arabian, the pizza is made to order and there is a menu selection of the region’s specialties.

The two rooftop lounges, Al Sarab and Al Shurouq showoff the magnificent desert sunsets. Dimmed lanterns outline the Arabian setting and the shisha variety offers plenty flavour for choice. You can also enjoy light bites, delicious drinks, teas and coffees.

Ya Hala Bar offers comfort and Arabic charm, a warm and welcoming space that is perfect for afternoon tea or a drink and snack.

The Pool Bar on the other hand is a great outdoor chill. Laze next to the pool and enjoy the desert heat with “your cool down” right in front of you. The pool bar has a great mains, salads, nibbles and desserts menu too.

We decided our first evening should be spent watching the sun go down from the Al Shurouq lounge, and what a sunset it was! Our first day in this Arabian desert dream had come to an end and it felt so surreal. I closed my eyes that night with the biggest smile on my face.

The rest of our desert escape was spent tasting the different cuisines at the restaurants, sipping on refreshing drinks by the infinity pool and taking walks through the resort. It was quiet and peaceful there in the desert.

Bab Al Shams has a gym for those wanting to stay actively fit, and there’s also Satori Spa for a full relaxation and rejuvenation of the body, mind and soul. The leisure activities include desert drives, camel riding, archery, and more. There are also loads of fun activities for kids to take part in, so whether you’re traveling alone, with a loved one or children, Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa will have just what you need.

Thinking back on our time spent in this magical desert oasis, there’s one saying that immediately comes to mind, “….Wish you were here!”
